Gershwin/Frolov Concert Fantasy on Themes from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess
Ensemble Liaison @ Beleura
Described by Limelight magazine as a ‘national treasure’, Ensemble Liaison is one of Australia’s leading internationally acclaimed ensembles.
The program includes Brahms’s late masterpiece the Trio op.114, a work that brought the composer out of retirement to reflect back on a long life with both strength and resignation.
Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess is a love story against all odds and became a symbol of American culture. The hope for a better future despite the cruel evidence of experience is a strong message that shines through. Arranged by Ensemble Liaison, this Concert Fantasy contains all the great tunes from the Opera and a multitude of interactive virtuosic and fun passages for all the musicians.
Argentinian Astor Piazzolla reflects on the people of Buenos Aires and gives his impressions of the seasons though the lens of the Tango, a dance that in essence is all about being in the moment, relationship and love.
To conclude Timothy Young has written a new trio entitled, Distant Waters, based on a theme of questionable significance. Are you curious? - then come along to find out more

This program features Ligeti’s fabulously inventive Bagatelles, extracted from his Musica Ricercata, and some of the most well-known music written for wind and piano including Poulenc’s exuberant Piano Sextet and Francaix’s witty, L’Heure Du Berger, a tour de force of frivolous perfection! Finally we are excited that Svetlana will perform the Concerto for Cello and Winds by Australian clarinetist and composer Paul Dean.

Carnival!
Steve Reich - New York Counterpoint
Antonín Dvořák - Piano Quintet No.2 in A, Op.81
Camille Saint-Saëns - Le Carnaval des Animaux
What’s better than one clarinet, you ask? When Ensemble Liaison teams up with talented students and staff from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music there will be no fewer than 11.
Despite its maximalist cast, Steve Reich’s New York Counterpoint is minimalist in style, using the clarinets to create seemingly electronic sounds that depict the thrilling urban soundscape of Manhattan.
In Saint-Saëns’s brilliant Carnival of the Animals, a bold and hilarious combination of instruments represent a veritable zoo, populated with long-eared characters, kangaroos and, of course, the famous swan.
With wonderful guests and jubilant works, this concert has it all: drama, beauty and a jovial sensibility.
Pictures
Their first performance of the year in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall premieres a new trio, Out of Darkness: Dawn, a charming work by one of Australia’s leading composers, Paul Stanhope.
John Dowland’s In Darkness Let Me Dwell was the inspiration behind Stanhope’s new work, encouraging the trio to continue their exploration of this early music with extraordinary works by Carissimi and Corelli.
Finishing with an epic musical journey, the trio’s own special transcription of Mussorgsky’s timeless masterpiece, Pictures at an Exhibition is engaging and powerful. An animated, intimate and joyous event not to be missed.

We are delighted to welcome back to the ADCH stage our very own 'national treasure' for a beautiful program featuring the lesser-known Trio in D minor by Alexander von Zemlinsky. Inspired by Brahms’ magnificent Op. 113 trio, Zemlinsky entered his trio into a composition competition in 1896 in which Brahms was one of the judges. Brahms subsequently wrote to his publisher to recommended they publish the work which helped launch Zemlinsky’s career.
The Titan
Ensemble Liaison teams up with talented young musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) for Mahler’s majestic Symphony No.1, ‘The Titan’, in a unique chamber arrangement for 16 solo instruments by Klaus Simon. In addition to this masterpiece, Ensemble Liaison also presents the world premiere of a new trio by one of Australia’s leading composers, Paul Stanhope.

David Jones and Ensemble Liaison first collaborated in 2011. The long-awaited return of their critically acclaimed partnership is a rare chance to explore brilliant music for this unusual combination of instruments.
